Java vs. Bedrock
We've developed two separate versions of Minecraft so that the game runs well on different platforms. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition runs on one kind of code, and the Java Edition (for Windows, macOS, and Linux) runs on another.
The Java Edition is the original version of Minecraft. It can be purchased and downloaded from the Minecraft website. It supports cross-platform play between Windows, Linux, and macOS as well as user-created skins and mods.
The Bedrock Edition of Minecraft can be purchased for and played on consoles, mobile devices, and computers running Windows. Cross-platform play is supported with other Bedrock players, plus Bedrock players have access to Minecraft Marketplace where they can purchase and download skins, maps, etc., created by Minecraft and Minecraft Creators to enhance their gameplay.
